Itinerary

Day 1 – Saturday: Cocktails and Greens

We’ll meet up on Saturday afternoon at Z Hostel, in the thriving Poblacion district of Makati. After a rooftop welcome cocktail, we’ll head to The Ruins, a beautifully restored ancient building which has been converted into an art and event space. There, we will discover our first sustainable initiative of the trip – Urban Greens – which was co-founded by Filipino-European, Ralph Becker, and boasts an urban farm setup lush with fresh herbs and vegetables (right in the heart of the city!). Then we’ll have dinner at an independent local restaurant that features modern Filipino food, cocktails & art.

Stages: Manila | Accommodation: Z Hostel, Poblacion, Makati

Day 2: Old and New

We will start this day by discovering old Manila. Bambike is a social enterprise that handcrafts bikes from locally grown bamboo and runs eco-friendly bike tours around the city. Grab a bike and get ready to cruise through Intramuros (aka “The Walled City)”. We’re willing to bet this is the most fun Filipino history lesson you’ll ever have! Bonus: Try some Filipino street food from the carts you’ll find (turon for the sweet tooth, isaw for the adventurous).

In the afternoon, we’ll visit a village put up by Gawad Kalinga. The organization houses poor and homeless Filipinos in peaceful, colorful, and value-oriented communities. Here you’ll get a taste (literally!*) of Filipino hospitality and hope as the community members welcome you into their kitchens, working spaces, playgrounds, and gardens. This community is also home to GKonomics – a platform that allows social entrepreneurs, volunteers, corporations, and schools to work with underprivileged communities. Guests who visit GK communities always leave with the feeling of having met new family members and rediscovering the potential of the Filipino. In the evening, we’ll travel to the GK Enchanted Farm.

*GK communities make the best merienda.

Stages: Manila | Accommodation: GK Enchanted Farm, Bulacan

Day 3-4: Enchanted

The GK Enchanted Farm is the first Farm-Village-University in the world. It’s home to students, volunteers, and social entrepreneurs of all ages and backgrounds as well as some of the premier social enterprises in the country.

On Monday, we’ll take a tour of the 43-hectare land and learn about the GK approach to ending poverty, meet local community members, and pick the brains of local and international social entrepreneurs to learn their approaches to business.

On Tuesday, we’ll get our hands dirty to get the environment clean. We’ll spend the morning like farmers and learn about agriculture and environmental sustainability. The Plastic Solution will also drop by for a workshop on turning our plastic waste into productive eco-bricks.

By the end of our stay in the Enchanted Farm, we’ll have a good understanding of the poverty mindset and the many ways it can be overcome.

Stages: GK Enchanted Farm | Accommodation: GK Enchanted Farm, Bulacan

Day 5: A Roadtrip & A Sunset

Pack your bags – we’re going to the beach! San Felipe, Zambales is a small but popular surfing town north of the Enchanted Farm. We’ll arrive just in time to catch the beautiful sunset by the shore.

Stages: Zambales | Accommodation: The Circle Hostel, Zambales (Subject to change to accommodation of choice)

Day 6-7: Gardens Green, Skin Tan

Help out at a community compost and turn food waste into fertilizer and prepare some seeds for the indigenous tribe we’re visiting on Day 8!

Can’t get enough of the island? Island hopping and waterfall treks are available on either (or both!) days.

Stages: Zambales | Accommodation: The Circle Hostel, Zambales (Subject to change to accommodation of choice)

Day 8: Tribes and Treks

It’s time to get off the beaten track and go on an adventure that matters!

Trek through beautiful volcanic ash and fresh rivers to meet the indigenous Aeta tribe of Yangil. Have a delicious Filipino lunch, participate in tribal songs and dances (even if you can’t sing or dance, you will), try your hand at native archery (can you beat the village grandfather and champion archer?), learn herbal medicine, and help rebuild the tribe’s rainforest.

If it sounds like a ton of fun, that’s cause it is!

Stages: Zambales | Accommodation: The Circle Hostel, Zambales (Subject to change to accommodation of choice)

Day 9-10: Beaches and Bars

We like to make sure we leave places better than we found them. In the morning we’ll be heading back to the beach for a beach clean up with other Zambales travelers followed by some down time by the shore.

In the afternoon we’ll hop on a bus back to Z Hostel and cap the tour off with sunset drinks and live music.

Stages: Manila | Accommodation: Z Hostel, Poblacion, Makati

Social Impact

By choosing to go MAD, the food you eat and the bed you sleep on (if you opt for a homestay experience) generate income for the local community. MAD Travel sees the communities we work with as travel partners, so we also invest in improving infrastructure and training the communities so they can gain employable skills.
